What is tarmac?

Tarmac is a commonly black but occasionally other coloured road surfacing material made by combining solid, compressed or aggregate surfaces with tar and sand at high temperatures.

How much is a tarmac driveway?

Costs depend on the size of your driveway, material used, the colour chosen & any base work required. Many people also choose to have block edging around a tarmac driveway.

Are there different coloured tarmacs?

Tarmac is most commonly black but is available in a range of colours & shades including; white, quartzite, orange, red, terracotta, grey, green, green or blue but different colours often come from specialist companies and will raise the cost of a driveway installation.

When can I walk or park on my tarmac drive?

The recommended wait time before use is at least 3 days. But, if you have to, it is safe to walk on but only 24 hours after it has been compacted.

Will I need planning permission for a tarmac drive?

If you are resurfacing you do not need any permissions. The only time you need permission is if it is a front garden and if the rainwater is going to be directed to the main drains.

How long will it take to lay a tarmac drive?

Most skilled workers can lay a tarmac drive within 2-3 days but this is all dependant on the size of the drive, works needed before the tarmac can be laid, compacting times and drying times for the tarmac.

Can tarmac be laid all year round?

Tarmac requires dry and somewhat warm surfaces to be laid as tarmac will not set correctly in ground that has too low a temperature.

How long will my driveway last?

You should expect your driveway to last 12 – 20 years minimum as long as general upkeep and regular maintenance are kept to a decent standard.

Does tarmac require maintenance?

It’s good practice to provide maintenance to your driveway usually in the form of regular sweeping & jet washing but to extend the life of your tarmac driveway, you can apply a sealant to its surface.
